Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Tranquilizers and antidepressants are a different class of drugs. Tranquilizers make people more calm whereas antidepressants are used to treat depressions . Without proper medical diagnosis it can be very tough to understand differences between symptoms and side effects and conditions for depression and anxiety.

In general antidepressants may take longer to work on depression. Also when they are stopped it may take much longer for their effects to fade away. Many moderns antidepressants may not make people feel drowsy like Tranquilizers.

Use extreme caution and when taking Tranquilizers or antidepressants. Never take these class of drugs without proper prescription.

Whenever you want to calm or soothe your nerves, you may have taken chamomile tea, or have used other herbal remedies. However there are cases when you may need to seek medical treatment. Tranquilizers have been around since 1960. In early days, chlordiazepoxide belonging to a group of tranquilizers called benzodiazepines was used. They were also referred to as benzos. Earlier there was no data about the safety that was available and these were wrongly thought as being safe and effective for wide category of problems. One of the major problems with these medicines was dependence.

A common side effect of tranquilizers is a feeling of slowness. They may reduce anxiety, but may slow the responses and cause sedative effects. Some of these medicines may also affect alertness and coordination. These medicines should not be used when you are operating machinery or driving.

Additional side effects may be depression and an additional treatment with antidepressants may be necessary. It can become very complex for an ordinary person to sort out the symptoms and side effects and real problems if you start taking combinations of these drugs. You should always consult authorized medical practitioner.

Best way to loose Weight low-carb or low fat?

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

Diet is only one approach to healthy weight loss. Exercise is another equally important component.

It appears that low-carb, high protein diets are not as popular as they once used to be. However researches are still interested in finding out if low carb diet is better than low fat diet ?. One of the recent studies published in Archives of internal medicine suggests that there may be benefits and disadvantages to both the choices

The study found that in short term low carb dieters lost more than low fat dieters , but the differences were not as significant after first year.

Even though low carb diet increased the HDL (good cholesterol), it also increased the LDL (bad cholesterol).

Study also found that even though more people were able to stick with low carb diet, after about an year – it was difficult for people to continue their diets.

So is their a best way to loose weight ? It depends on your nature, if you have the tenacity to continue with regular regimen of healthy eating and exercise and enjoy the process then you may be able to loose weight and also tone your body.

Get a good balance of good carbs – fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Also get a good fats from olive oil and avocados. And don’t forget yoga poses or other form of exercise.

Live longer and Stay healthy by washing dishes?

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

A recent study by National Institute on Aging shows that active seniors are 70% likely to live longer. This should serve as an important reminder for Couch Potato lifestyles that some of the retirees of baby boomer generation may adopt.Drop that remote: try walking up to the TV to change the channels.

Instead of watching TV, walk to your car, take a walk in the park, work in your garden, even wash dishes, fold your laundry but do something with regular activity. Simple Yoga poses will be a great way to get started if you can handle them.

This again brings into light the value of exercise for healthy living.  Even if you fear the dreaded routine of exercises, just any reasonable activity is better than not activity at all. You can do some simple exercise, but at regular frequency.
Government now recommends a minimum of 30 minutes a day of moderate activity, such as brisk walking. However, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women over age 75 are not physically active at all.

The new study, published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association , did a complete study of 300 men and women and found that the least active group was three times as likely to die.

The researchers also found that an average older person, would burn the necessary calories to stay healthy by doing about hour to hour and half of household chores, or any other volunteer work that doesn’t involve just sitting in one location.

If you are younger or middle aged you need to do much more than that.

This study is important because it provides credible evidence that everyday simple activities may be beneficial.

What is exercise ? exercise is any planned physical activity that is structured, and is repetitive for the purpose of conditioning and toning any part of the body. Exercise helps improve general health and allows individuals to maintain fitness and is a very critical component of any good physical rehabilitation  program.

A good and long term Exercise regimen acts as preventive measure for not only treating coronary heart disease , osteoporosis but also helps reduce weakness, may prevent further worsening of diabetes, help reduce obesity , and reduce depression and keep it in check.

Exercise Safety Precautions:

Before beginning any exercise program, complete evaluation by a physician is very important.  This is necessary to rule out any serious strain or possible muscle injuries and to pinpoint potential health risks.

These exercises are intended for muscle strength and mass , bone strength, and to increase the body’s overall metabolism. Strength training stimulates the growth of proteins. There are three key types of strength training exercises – isometric, isotonic and isokinetic

Isotonic : Muscle contraction with joint movements: Isotonic exercise have  movement of the joint along with muscle contraction. Weight training with dumbbells is one of the most common isotonic exercise..

Isokinetic : Calisthenics is also another example of isotonic exercise. These would include push-ups, and sit-ups. These exercises use the body weight as resistance. These exercises can be performed on open air with no additional equipments necessary.

How painkillers work – how aspirin works?

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Aspirin has become such a common pain killers that sometimes people use that as part of home remedies for natural health. however taking aspirin is different from natural cure. Pain is felt by the brain because of impulses that are carried to the brain and that’s where painkiller focus. Painkillers do not remove the cause of the pain and do not by themselves help heal the wounds or causes of pain. There are many categories of pain killers – Aspirin, NSAIDs, Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and other powerful pain killers that should be taken only under strict medical supervision.

Some pain killer affect the sensors that detect the damage and produce the signals. Some painkiller reduce the intensity of the signals as they travel to the brain. Some other groups of pain killers work on the brain. So the brain may get the pain signals but will not interpret it since they get blocked or changed in some way.

Some painkillers like aspirin are called anti-inflammatory. They reduce swelling and soreness of inflammation where body is feeling the pain. Since the inflammation itself causes the pain , when aspirin reduces the inflammation, the pain perceived by the body is also lessened.

Aspirin works by stopping the production of body chemical known as prostaglandins. prostaglandins are the key to activating the inflammatory response and production of pain, and fever. When tissues are damaged, white blood cells flood to the site to try to minimize tissue destruction. Prostaglandins are produced as a result.

Aspirin works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, COX-1 and COX-2, which is critical to ultimate creation prostaglandins. Aspirin essentially works by inhibiting or blocking an enzyme that is key to the synthesis of prostaglandins is blocked. This in turn relives pain effects and fever.

Aspirin Side Effects: However like many modern medicines Aspirin can also have other side effects. For example although it may help in preventing blood clotting in coronary heart disease, but at the same time if there is injury while taking aspirin long term, then it may lead to more bleeding than normal. This problem is likely to occur depending on the amount of aspirin and duration aspirin dose.

PainKillers, Use with caution: even though many of the painkillers are availble as OTC or over-the-counter drugs, they tend to have lot of long term side effects if proper recommendations are not followed. It is important to consult doctor if you are planning to take these pain killers for more than a day or so. In no event should you exceed what is recommended on the labels. Sometimes the result of exceeding the dosage can be long term and irreversible.

NSAID use may have some benefits to ovarian cancer

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Aspirin that has been used by many as some common pain killer home remedy may have some benefits to reduce ovarian cancer risks. Regular use of common painkillers or NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen may be associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer. However this study is too early and hence researchers are not yet recommending these drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen solely for possibly preventing ovarian cancer.

Asprin helped the most with risk reduction being strongest at 37 percent. Tylenol (that contains acetaminophen) also helped albeit slightly less compared to aspirin at 22%

All the painkllers (example acetaminophen) also may have significant side effects such as liver damage if not taken properly. It is important to understand that this information should not be considered conclusive until more scientific testing is done.
